Which DevOps RoadMap is the best for 2023?
I analysed dozens of resources I could find about DevOps roadmap in 2023 and here is a recap
DevOps and SRE keep trending in 2023 and a lot of people are trying to understand how to right that trend properly.
DevOps roadmap has been a pretty hot topic lately, having a lot of articles and references in blog posts.
After analyzing dozens of them there seem to be some common themes, and references to one of the few separate roadmaps crafted by different experts in the field.
I have to admit that RoadMap for performing DevOps transformation in the organization and roadmap for building a career in DevOps are different things, however, both of those are sometimes referenced as just DevOps RoadMap. We will be focusing on the second though.
Let’s look into the most interesting ones:
General DevOps Roadmaps
1. DevOps Roadmap by Kamran Ahmed
His project ‘Developer Roadmap’, which hosts ~30 roadmaps for different software engineering roles and directions hit 231k stars on GitHub.
The DevOps roadmap itself is pretty comprehensive, it nicely covers all the aspects of DevOps expertise. It covers what is the role of a DevOps engineer and also describes a list of tools, technologies, and frameworks to be mastered.
Along with that, this one might feel a bit overwhelming for people getting started with DevOps.
2. DevOps Roadmap by TechWorld with Nana
TechWorld with Nana has been skyrocketing during the past few years and there is a special version of the roadmap, which is very interesting as well.
Its distinction is that it focuses on understanding your starting point on what kind of background you have, like:
Systems Administrator
Software Developer
Test Engineer
Network Engineer
No or Little IT Background
The emphasis is that the path will be pretty different in all these cases and that’s where it can be extremely handy.
They also have a YouTube video on the topic.
3. DevOps Roadmap for 2023 by Milan Milanovic
This one is somewhat similar to the first one, but it just feels lighter and ‘easier to consume’, and it also contains a lot of links to free learning resources, which is nice.
4. DevOps Roadmap for Learning
This one is structured more in a format of a table of content with a lot of useful links to mostly free resources.
Each of them is decent from my point of view and all of them have intersections at the same time they might be useful for different use cases.
Cloud Engineer Roadmaps
Each of the major Cloud providers has its learning path, which is not really roadmaps, but more certifications mostly focused on leveraging their in-house DevOps solutions.
What is interesting — Google, invented the term SRE and produces tons of educational resources that still have a certification of ‘Cloud DevOps Engineer’ making a distinction between these roles and positioning the last as an evangelist of GCP’s DevOps stack probably.
Cloud Native Roadmap
At some in your career, you come to the Cloud Native and CNCF. This is definitely an extremely broader topic, having its own influencers and experts.
They also have what is called a ‘Trailmap’ of getting into Cloud Native.
As well as Cloud Native Landscape is definitely worth mentioning and investing time to learn.
Alternatively, one more, what I call ‘the roadmap of the higher level of abstraction’ may be the Technology Radar by Thoughtworks
It can be something very useful to keep an eye on regularly.
It may also be worth mentioning Kubernetes Roadmap from roadmap.sh.
Platform Engineering RoadMap
Platform Engineering is a very trendy topic these days in the context to be the future evolution of DevOps.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t have a clear RoadMap yet. I wonder if this is something to be done before and presented at PlatformCon 2023.
Resume
Understand your background (can use the framework from Nana)
Understand your goal:
you want to switch to DevOps and lend a new job
you want to progress in your current DevOps role
you want to add DevOps skills to your skillset on a different role
or you are performing a DevOps transformation in your org
3. Depending on these you may want to tailor your own custom roadmap using the resources from above.
